Having a day or week when everything goes horribly wrong? Case in point, a blog post mysteriously disappears just as you were about to click “publish”, your reliable bf and/or gf is spacey about making plans, or that work deadline you had, you somehow missed. Welp, chances are, mercury is in retrograde and is effing up all your shit.
Three to four times a year we experience Mercury retrograde, a three-ish week period when the planet slows its orbit around the sun and appears to be traveling backwards. Sometimes the other planets appear to be traveling backward through the zodiac, but it’s really an illusion that we call a retrograde motion. Think of it as a house guest that staggers into your home three times a year, taking up way too much space on your couch, eating all your hot takis and DVRing Jerry Springer. Yes, THAT house guest.
So what happens when Mercury is in retrograde? Since Mercury rules communication, clear thinking, truth and travel and more specifically, commerce, computers, telephones and transportation – expect a lot of delays, mishaps, forgetfulness, and just plain weird situations. Earlier this year, I travelled throughout Europe for an abroad class. Upon departing the States and entering France, I received emails of a TGV strike – I had already booked a train from Paris to Strasbourg for my class. Pretty much all trains were cancelled or delayed, which my train to Strasbourg operated two times a day instead of the normal eight. Essentially, I spent a good half of a day lurking about in Gare du Nord trying to hop on a train, before actually getting on one. It was such a headache
But the good news, Mercury in retrograde is actually a time for us to be nostalgic and to look into ourselves spiritually. Not to sound like Ms. Cleo or anything, but it is a time where we can reexamine and evaluate various areas of our life – be it work, love, or even friendships.
Now rocking out to Mercury in Retrograde, for like over 20 years now – yes I’m old – here are a few things I learned along the way.
Avoid Starting New Projects
I have a rule; I don’t start anything new while mercury is in retrograde. It’s kind of wacky, but I avoid entering into any new agreements, or initiating new projects during this cycle. Miscommunication is bound to happen and important details can get lost. Whatever you put into writing may require serious revision when Mercury goes direct.
Save Everything
If you didn’t know, mercury retrograde can crash electronic equipment, randomly. One moment, you’re playing on your new iPhone 6, uploading all your favorite songs or to do lists – the next, things can get lost. It means to double check and save/back up your computer, calendar, and cell phone address book.
Take things with a grain of salt
Everything goes haywire during this time. People get confused; plans go awry, so on and so forth. Take this time to be patient.
Reunite with your Exes
Weird but true. Also, this is a time when exes start creeping back into your life, so take advantage of it. It’s a perfect time to sit down with an ex (if you have that kind of relationship) and see from another’s perspective of what went wrong. You may uncover something you didn’t know about yourself in the process.
Clean your closet
Looking for an image re-do? Take the time to sift through your closet of unwanted or unnecessary items. Perhaps that cheetah print sweater isn’t your steeze anymore. Time to toss it out!
