This morning, courageous 17-year-old education activist, Malala Yousafzai was named a winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. She is the youngest recipient to be awarded the distinguished honor, and joins a long list of notable statesmen, including President Obama, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa. She is one of only 15 women to have received the award since its inception in 1901.
However, the inspiring Pakistani teen shares this year’s Nobel Peace Prize with Indian children’s rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. Satyarthi has been working on ending child labor and slavery for over three decades and is founder of the Save the Childhood Movement. As in past years, the theme for this year was for the “struggle against suppression of children and the right for education”, according to the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee. The prize comes with a $1.1 million award.
This honor comes as the icing on the cake for Malala, who, in the two years since being shot by the Taliban, has written a best-selling memoir, named as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People, and establishes herself as one of the world’s leading campaigners for children and girls’ education.
Major congratulations to them both! We remain inspired and in awe.
